Red and green Christmas garland framing a front door

An entrance sets the tone before anyone reaches the Christmas tree. A wreath can provide one clear detail; a garland can frame the whole doorway. Choose according to the space, the door’s movement and the amount of decoration you want to maintain. The right choice is the one that looks intentional and still lets the entrance function normally.

When a wreath is enough

A wreath works well when the doorway is narrow or you want a restrained entrance. Check its diameter against the door so it does not cover the handle, lock or viewing area. A bow can carry the colour theme without many extra ornaments. If the door is used frequently, check how the wreath will move and whether its attachment stays secure as the door opens and closes.

When to use a garland

A garland suits a broader frame or an entrance you want to make more prominent. Measure the sides and top of the doorway, including the sections where the decoration will be attached. Ask whether the frame and wall finish can support the agreed installation method. Keep hanging pieces clear of faces, handles and the walking route. Do not assume tape will hold a heavy arrangement.

Let the doorway guide the colours

Red and green create a strong festive contrast, while neutral ornaments can work with a quieter entrance. Consider the door colour and nearby walls before adding ribbon. If the house already has a tree palette, repeating one or two colours can connect the entrance to the interior. You can keep the outside more restrained even when the tree inside is richly decorated.

Check exposure and power

An indoor hallway and an exposed front door need different materials. Ask whether foliage, ribbon, ornaments and lights are suitable for the intended location. Follow product ratings and installation advice for electrical items. Keep connections away from water and do not run loose cords through the doorway. If you cannot arrange power safely, choose an unlit design instead.

Brief the decorator with measurements

Send a full doorway photograph, approximate width and height, exposure to weather and any attachment restrictions. Explain whether you want a wreath, a framed entrance or both. Confirm the materials, installation, removal and whether the decorations are yours to keep. FOA’s Christmas decoration service in Abuja can discuss the options; timing and costs are confirmed individually.

Common questions

Can a garland go on any door frame?

The attachment method and weight must suit the frame and wall finish. Share photos and any building restrictions before approving a design.

Do door decorations need lights?

No. Foliage, ornaments and ribbon can create a complete entrance without an electrical connection.
